Introduction to the book On Wings of Trust

Announcing the 2011 expanded edition of: On Wings of Trust - Captain Carole Litten's courageous pursuit of her dream to become a Navy and commercial pilot

On Wings of Trust is the memoir of Captain Carole Litten, who proved worthy of the trust of her 114 passengers and crew by skillfully landing an aircraft that suffered a smoke/fire emergency warning at 37,000 feet, and then, during rapid descent, an engine shutdown second emergency at 18,000 feet. Her subsequent search to find what provoked the engine failure that caused the emergencies uncovered an engineer's certification for flight that she considered a violation of the trust pilots must have in the maintenance of the aircraft they fly.

In addition to the tense narration of that emergency episode, Carole tells the true story of her struggle to become a navy, then a commercial pilot. Along the way, she overcame severe gender bias, including bogus threats of court martial and imposition of needlessly dangerous pilot training maneuvers by instructors intent on not allowing women to fly in their units. Carole's navy adventures also include anecdotes about physical fitness and wilderness training, tracking Russian submarines in the Caribbean, fatal episodes involving fellow pilots, collection of information for feedback to atomic subs, and escape from an attempted kidnapping in Dakar, Senegal.

Carole's story is a tale of challenge and adventure that will interest and entertain anyone who has been in an airplane, and will inspire individuals who are struggling against resistance to fulfill their destiny. This updated 2011 edition has added sections on Carole's difficult childhood, and on recovery from three years of medical disability that ended in reinstatement of her FAA license. (Why the new 2011 edition?)
